As Ohio’s only hospital dedicated entirely to the needs of women, MacDonald Women’s Hospital has been providing comprehensive and extraordinary care for more than 100 years.
MacDonald Women's Hospital had humble beginnings more than a century ago. In 1891 the Maternity Home of Cleveland Association opened a small hospital in an old residence on Huron Street. In 1892, the association was incorporated as the Maternity Hospital of Cleveland. Moving several times over the next 20 years, and progressing with each move, the hospital that began as six beds, grew to approximately 60 beds in 1912 when it was located in the 3700 block of Cedar Avenue. The hospital headquarters was known as the Maternity Dispensary of Lakeside Hospital and Western Reserve University. In 1917 a contract was established between Maternity Hospital and Western Reserve University whereby Maternity Hospital became the teaching field in Obstetrics for the Medical School.
